Hello from Washington, where I’m hosting our debate-night live chat. Follow along with us. |
|
We know one thing about tonight’s debate: It will be totally different than any of the previous 10 Democratic primary face-offs. |
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will meet, for the first time, in a one-on-one matchup. Both men will be trying to prove their presidential credentials amid a deadly pandemic, a time when national leadership now includes life-or-death calculations. |
Mr. Biden, who has a nearly insurmountable lead in the primary race, enters as the front-runner. Mr. Sanders, meanwhile, has telegraphed a de-escalation of sorts. Aggressive attacks may not play well with anxious voters worried about what the future may bring. |
Even the optics will be radically different. The candidates’ lecterns will be placed six feet apart, in line with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for keeping a safe distance from others. |
Join our live chat for our real-time analysis. I’m hosting our panel of reporters, including Maggie Haberman, Astead W. Herndon, Thomas Kaplan, Jennifer Medina and Margot Sanger-Katz. If you’re watching the debate on TV (it’s on CNN), be sure to follow along with us. |
And I’ll be back in the morning with a special edition of On Politics, sharing my thoughts on everything that happens tonight. |
